37. Draymond Green
50 WORDS ON DRAYMOND GREEN
Draymond Green made genius look belligerent. He quarterbacked defenses, unlocked offenses, guarded centers, baited opponents, screamed through rotations, and turned emotional combustion into a championship resource. The box score rarely explained him. Sometimes neither did behavior. But Golden State’s beautiful machine needed one loud, complicated part willing to get dirty.

THE PEAK
2015-16 - This was the version of Draymond with virtually no compromises. He averaged 14.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists, shot 38.8% from three, recorded 13 triple-doubles, made All-NBA Second Team and First Team All-Defense, and finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting for a 73-win team.
The following season brought the trophy that formally recognized his defense. But 2015–16 Draymond could punish you everywhere: switch onto guards, quarterback the back line, push the break, run 4-on-3s, initiate offense, and even make enough jumpers that ignoring him came with consequences.
WTF STAT
Only player in NBA history with a triple double that didn't include points (12 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 steals).
NON-BASKETBALL COMPARISON
A Smoke Detector - It's job is to notice danger before everybody else does, then make absolutely certain nobody can ignore it. That's Draymond Green’s role. He sees the screen, the cutter, the mismatch forming three seconds early, then starts yelling. Sometimes the noise drives everyone crazy. Sometimes it's the reason the house doesn't burn down.
THE RIPPLE
Draymond helped make positionless basketball functional rather than theoretical.
Golden State could play small without actually playing small because Draymond defended centers, switched onto guards, rebounded, protected the rim, and then became a playmaker at the other end. His ability to function as both defensive anchor and offensive connector helped turn the undersized five from a situational gimmick into one of the defining lineup concepts of the era.
Plenty of players have been called “versatile.” Draymond showed how versatility could become the organizing principle of an entire championship system.
WHAT HIS PEERS SAY
“Draymond is a catalyst and the anchor for their defense. Very, very smart defensively. He knows pretty much every set. He kind of flies around and dictates their defense, either on the perimeter or protecting the rim as well.” - (LeBron James, 2018)
IN HIS OWN WORDS
“That’s how I like to approach the defensive end: a linebacker who’s going to get everybody in the right spots. And after I get them into the right spots, that middle linebacker has to be there to cover them.” - (Draymond Green, 2021)
