8. Giannis Antetokounmpo
50 WORDS ON GIANNIS ANTETOKOUNMPO
Giannis Antetokounmpo made the court look too small for his body. Two strides swallowed space, help defenders became traffic cones, and every rebound threatened to become a stampede. Yet the violence came wrapped in joy, humility and stubborn improvement. He didn’t polish away his weirdness. He turned it into dominance.

THE PEAK
2019-20 - Giannis averaged 29.5 points, 13.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists in only 30.4 minutes per game, won his second straight MVP, and also won Defensive Player of the Year. That made him just the third player ever to win MVP and DPOY in the same season, joining Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon.
The 2021 title run is the superior career accomplishment. 2019–20 is the most overwhelming version of the basketball player.

NON-BASKETBALL COMPARISON
The Kool-Aid Man - You build a wall and you think the problem is solved, but what happens when someone is capable of busting through that wall? The NBA became so desperate to stop Giannis Antetokounmpo that it invented a defense named after a piece of architecture, and his response was basically “OH YEAH!"
THE RIPPLE
Giannis helped push the league further toward the idea that size and ball-handling no longer had to belong to separate positions.
At nearly seven feet, he could grab a rebound and become the transition point guard himself, collapse an entire defense without a traditional post-up, initiate offense from the perimeter, screen and roll, and then anchor a defense at the other end. Milwaukee could surround him with shooting and essentially use his downhill force as its own form of spacing.
His influence also showed up defensively. Giannis could function as a rim protector, roaming help defender or switchable perimeter defender, reinforcing the value of bigs who could solve multiple defensive problems without changing personnel.
He didn’t invent the point-forward or positionless basketball, but he became one of the most extreme demonstrations of what happens when a big man possesses guard-like freedom of movement and creation.
WHAT HIS PEERS SAY
“He plays hard as shit. Anytime I’ve played him, he plays the same. Like, he’s crashing the glass. Like, you don’t see that from top five players in the league. And just the energy he’s exerting, he playing hard as hell.” - (Jabari Smith Jr., 2025)
"I kind of try to focus on the moment, in the present. That’s humility. That’s being humble. That’s not setting no expectation. That’s going out there, enjoying the game, competing at a high level." - (Giannis Antetokounmpo, 2022)
