35. Joel Embiid
50 WORDS ON JOEL EMBIID
Joel Embiid was basketball built at impossible scale: seven feet of power, footwork, touch, theater and spite. He could bully centers, dance into jumpers, bait fouls, protect the rim, then troll everyone afterward. The tragedy was availability. Every masterpiece carried the same uneasy question: how long would his body last?

THE PEAK
2022-23 - Joel Embiid averaged 33.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists, won his second straight scoring title, and captured his first MVP award.
This was the season where the full package finally aligned: overpowering interior scoring, face-up shotmaking, foul pressure, rim protection, and enough playmaking to punish the extra attention he commanded. All it lacked was the kick-ass playoff run.
WTF STAT
Scored 1,353 points in just 1,309 minutes during the 2023-24 season, becoming the first NBA player since Wilt Chamberlain in 1961-62 to average at least one point per minute over a season.
NON-BASKETBALL COMPARISON
A Cathedral Built on a Fault Line - Enormous, complicated, beautiful, and improbably engineered. But fatally flawed because of the tectonic plates beneath the surface. Joel Embiid is awe-inspiring and magnificent, but with each passing minute, you can't help but wonder how much longer he can withstand.
THE RIPPLE
Embiid helped push the scoring center back toward the middle of the NBA universe.
He showed that a modern big didn’t have to choose between old-school physical dominance and perimeter skill. He could punish switches in the post, face up from 18 feet, draw fouls like a wing, shoot threes, and still anchor a defense at the rim.
His broader impact is that he helped preserve the idea of the center as primary scorer in an era increasingly built around perimeter creation.
WHAT HIS PEERS SAY
"There’s no player in the world like Joel Embiid." - (Rudy Gobert, 2022)
IN HIS OWN WORDS
"I want to dominate. It's fun. One thing when I started playing in the league, I saw that a lot of guys are friendly. It’s OK to be friendly, especially off the court. But on the court, I want to dominate." - (Joel Embiid, 2019)
