45. Kyle Lowry

50 WORDS ON KYLE LOWRY

Kyle Lowry made basketball look like a contact sport invented in Philadelphia. He flopped, fought, bulldozed, baited, passed, bombed threes and somehow controlled games while looking chaotic. Toronto loved him because he was useful in every possible way. Opponents hated him for exactly the same reason. Perfect point guard nuisance.

THE PEAK

2015-16 - This was the season when Lowry’s late-blooming rise fully became stardom. He averaged 21.2 points, 6.4 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 2.1 steals, made his second straight All-Star team, earned his only All-NBA selection, and helped Toronto win 56 games and reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time.

Later Lowry became wiser, steadier and ultimately a champion. But this was the version with the fullest combination of creation, shooting, defense, physicality and sheer force of personality.

WTF STAT

Retired with 296 regular-season charges drawn, the most in the NBA’s tracked play-by-play era.

NON-BASKETBALL COMPARISON

The Joker yelling “HIT ME!” in The Dark Knight - Kyle Lowry spent his career standing directly in the path of much larger human beings and essentially daring them to make the obvious decision. He turned physical sacrifice into strategy, hoping you'd be dumb enough to give him what he wanted.

THE RIPPLE

Lowry became one of the defining examples of how much value can exist in the spaces between conventional box-score categories. He screened, rebounded, drew charges, organized possessions, defended bigger players and constantly created tiny advantages that accumulated into winning basketball. His career became a blueprint for the undersized lead guard whose impact exceeds his scoring average — and for the late bloomer who can become the emotional identity of an entire franchise.

Toronto’s own record book reflects how comprehensive that impact became: Lowry finished his Raptors tenure as the franchise leader in assists, three-pointers and steals.

WHAT HIS PEERS SAY

"With Kyle it’s the toughness. You’d be amazed how many 4th quarter offensive rebounds this guy gets. And loose balls. And steals. Dog pound all the way." - (Lou Williams, 2020)

IN HIS OWN WORDS

"My upbringing molded my game. When you’re the youngest guy on the court and every other player is bigger and stronger than you, the job description is simple: Hustle. Take charges, dive for balls, set picks and do not shoot, but always make it when you do." - (Kyle Lowry, 2019)
