50 WORDS ON LUKA DONCIC

Luka Doncic played basketball like every possession was an argument he already knew he would win. He slowed defenders down, leaned on them, baited switches, threaded passes, and laughed when things got personal. Nothing looked hurried because Luka controlled the hands inside the clock. Eventually, everyone plays at his pace.

THE PEAK

2023-24 - Luka Doncic averaged 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 9.8 assists, won his first scoring title, finished third in MVP voting, and then took Dallas through the West and into the NBA Finals.

It’s the season where all the pieces were simultaneously at maximum volume: scoring, rebounding, manipulation of the pick-and-roll, absurd skip passes, post mismatches, step-back threes and the ability to control nearly every meaningful decision an offense made.

WTF STAT

Only player in league history to ever to lead a postseason in total points, rebounds, assists AND steals.

NON-BASKETBALL COMPARISON

Bugs Bunny - Bugs Bunny’s real superpower isn’t speed or strength. It’s getting increasingly irritated opponents to defeat themselves. Luka Doncic does this constantly. Talk shit, pressure him, get emotional, chase him around—and five minutes later you’re committing a stupid foul while he’s smiling at you like this was his plan the whole time. And even if it wasn’t, then being a basketball prodigy sure helps.

THE RIPPLE

Luka pushed the oversized primary creator archetype toward its logical extreme.

LeBron and Harden had already demonstrated different versions of heliocentric offense, but Luka showed how a huge guard could combine post play, pick-and-roll orchestration, deceleration, step-back shooting and cross-court passing into an offense that operated almost entirely at his preferred pace. He made breakneck speed feel optional. The defense could know exactly what action was coming and still spend 20 seconds being manipulated into the matchup Luka wanted.

His ripple is less “everyone copied this move” and more teams became even more obsessed with finding giant players who could think and create like point guards.

WHAT HIS PEERS SAY

“I’ve never seen a guy enjoy the game so much during it. If he does something good, he can’t stop smiling. Even in practice.” - (J.J. Barea, 2018)

IN HIS OWN WORDS

“I like when people trash talk to me. It gets me going. It’s fun.” - (Luka Doncic, 2022)
