17. Russell Westbrook
50 WORDS ON RUSSELL WESTBROOK
Russell Westbrook played basketball like someone had challenged the concept of moderation. Every rebound became a sprint, every lane an invitation, every possession combustible. He missed loudly, succeeded violently, and never learned caution. The flaws were real. So was the force. Nobody made reckless abandon feel more completely like identity.

THE PEAK
2016-17 - Westbrook averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists, won the scoring title and MVP, and became the first player since Oscar Robertson in 1961–62 to average a triple-double for an entire season. He also produced 42 triple-doubles, breaking Robertson’s 55-year-old single-season record.
But what makes this his Peak isn't merely the triple-double. Kevin Durant had just started a new chapter in Golden State, Oklahoma City’s offense was suddenly built almost entirely around Westbrook, and his response was essentially to play every possession like someone had pressed the turbo button, despite carrying an insane 41.7% usage rate.
It was Russell Westbrook with absolutely no restriction.
WTF STAT
Four separate seasons averaging a triple-double, and the only player in league history to average at least 11.5 rebounds and 11.5 assists in the same season.
NON-BASKETBALL COMPARISON
Stone Cold Steve Austin - The sound of glass shattering meant Stone Cold Steve Austin was coming down to the ring, and subtlety was officially over. Russell Westbrook played basketball with that same entrance music energy. Every rebound felt like the opening bell, every fast break like a charge down the ramp. Loud, defiant, explosive, and impossible to ignore.
THE RIPPLE
Westbrook fundamentally changed the way basketball talked about the triple-double.
Before him, averaging one for a season belonged to the almost mythological Oscar Robertson category. Westbrook did it in 2016–17 — and then did it three consecutive seasons, eventually averaging a triple-double four times in five years.
That doesn’t mean he alone caused the league’s explosion in triple-doubles; pace, spacing and increasingly ball-dominant creators all mattered. But Westbrook helped transform the feat from something viewed as essentially unreachable into a recognizable expression of modern superstar creation.
He also pushed the concept of guard rebounding as offense. Rather than waiting for an outlet pass, Westbrook could collect the rebound himself and immediately turn defense into transition. For better and worse, his career became one of the purest examples of a team empowering one player to influence virtually every possession.
And as of October 2026, his 209 career triple-doubles remain the NBA record.
