25. Tracy McGrady
50 WORDS ON TRACY MCGRADY
Tracy McGrady made domination look half-asleep. Long strides, sleepy eyes, high release, sudden violence. He glided where others labored, scoring from everywhere without seeming to accelerate. The cruelty was how unfinished it felt. His peak suggested anything was possible; his body kept reminding us that possibility has an expiration date.

THE PEAK
2002-03 - At just 23, Tracy McGrady averaged 32.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists, led the NBA in scoring, made First Team All-NBA and finished fourth in MVP voting. He did it while shooting 45.7% from the field and 38.6% from three.
This was the fully unleashed Orlando version of T-Mac: enormous for a perimeter creator, effortlessly fluid, capable of shooting over defenders or simply gliding past them, and responsible for an almost absurd percentage of his team’s offensive creation.
There were great Houston seasons. There was no better T-Mac than this.
WTF STAT
Scored 30+ points 51 times during the 2002-03 season, while the Orlando Magic only won 42 games.
NON-BASKETBALL COMPARISON
The Opening Beat of 'Still D.R.E.' - There’s no buildup required. The second those piano notes start, the entire thing already has your attention. It’s smooth, confident, instantly recognizable, and somehow never sounds like it’s trying too hard. Peak Tracy McGrady played basketball the same way. One dribble, one rise-up jumper, one sleepy-eyed stare—and the cool was already established.
THE RIPPLE
McGrady helped establish the superstar template of the oversized perimeter creator.
At 6-foot-8, he could handle and create like a guard, shoot pull-up threes, pass over defenses, attack the rim and manufacture shots against almost any matchup. That combination feels commonplace now because the NBA has spent years searching for big wings who can function as entire offenses.
McGrady wasn’t the first of that lineage, but his particular mix of length, handle, shooting and playmaking became one of the clearest early-2000s visions of what the modern scoring wing would eventually become.
WHAT HIS PEERS SAY
“The guy that always gave me the most problems... was Tracy McGrady. He could do everything I could, but he was 6'10".” - (Kobe Bryant, 2013)
IN HIS OWN WORDS
“My game is just kind of smooth, it’s like laid back... I just make things happen out there.” - (Tracy McGrady, 2001)
