28. Carmelo Anthony
50 WORDS ON CARMELO ANTHONY
Carmelo Anthony made scoring feel like a private conversation between him and his defender. Jab. Pause. Shoulder. Fade. The offense could stall around him, but the craftsmanship remained hypnotic. He never found the perfect team context, yet his individual brilliance was unmistakable: muscular, patient, stylish, stubborn, gloriously his and unforgettable.

THE PEAK
2012-13 - This is Melo at his most effective. He averaged a league-leading 28.7 points, finished third in MVP voting, made All-NBA Second Team, and led New York to 54 wins and the No. 2 seed in the East. It was also the season where playing him more regularly at power forward created the cleanest marriage between his isolation scoring and modern spacing.
Denver Melo may have been more explosive athletically, but 2012–13 is the version where his scoring genius translated most completely into winning.
WTF STAT
Scored the most points in an NBA game (62) without committing a turnover since individual turnovers began being tracked in 1977-78.
NON-BASKETBALL COMPARISON
The First Puff of a Great Cigar - Smooth. Luxurious. Deliberate. Almost defiantly unconcerned with efficiency or hurry. You sit back and enjoy it. Carmelo Anthony jab-stepping somebody into oblivion from the left elbow is basketball's expensive cigar.
THE RIPPLE
Carmelo became one of the defining teachers of triple-threat scoring for his generation.
The jab step, the face-up game, the shoulder fake, the one-dribble pull-up, the bully-ball post-up against smaller wings — Melo turned the space between the three-point line and the restricted area into his own personal workshop. Terrific isolation and midrange scorers came before him, but his particular combination of forward size and guard-like shot creation became something younger scorers studied and imitated.
WHAT HIS PEERS SAY
"I always said, he had everything. He was strong first but post up, drive, threes, pull up, iso, jab, like turnaround, bully ball, like everything. I always say he's the toughest guy I had to guard in my career." - (Nic Batum, 2025)
IN HIS OWN WORDS
"It's in my nature to love contact. The way I play, I like to get to the hole and I'll do whatever it takes to get there. I like going about it the hard way. I love to get thrown on the floor, pushed around. It's fun. The game is a physical game. I want to go out there and play physical." - (Carmelo Anthony, 2010)
