50 WORDS ON NIKOLA JOKIC

Nikola Jokic made basketball look like a problem he’d solved years ago and was politely waiting for everyone else to finish. He lumbered, nudged, flipped, passed and somehow controlled every angle. Nothing looked urgent because nothing surprised him. Defenses scrambled. Teammates cut. Jokic placed the ball where reality was headed.

THE PEAK

2024-25 - Jokic averaged 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 10.2 assists, becoming the first center in NBA history to average a triple-double. He finished second in MVP voting, a fifth consecutive season finishing first or second.

The 2022–23 version has the championship and the defining playoff run. But by 2024–25, Jokic had essentially completed the evolution: scorer, rebounder, transition initiator, half-court conductor and arguably the league’s most complete offensive ecosystem.

2022–23 is the greatest Jokic season narratively. 2024–25 is the fullest version of Jokic the basketball player.

WTF STAT

Only player in NBA history to finish the season top three in points, rebounds, assists AND steals per game.

NON-BASKETBALL COMPARISON

Jigsaw - Jigsaw rarely overpowers anyone himself. He designs the game, presents you with choices, and already knows how each one ends. Nikola Jokic runs an offense the same way. Double him, stay home, switch, drop—it feels like you’re making decisions, until you realize every option was part of his plan. And while everyone else treats the stakes like life or death, Jokic never seems to forget that it’s still just a game.

THE RIPPLE

Jokic fundamentally expanded what teams could imagine a center doing with an offense. Sure, great passing big men existed long before him. But Jokic pushed the concept from “a center who is an excellent passer”to “the center is the point guard.”

Denver could run offense through him at the elbow, on the block, above the three-point line, in transition or as the screener in a two-man game. His rebounding immediately became playmaking. His post-ups became passing hubs. Cutting became more valuable because defenders couldn't turn their heads. Even conventional pick-and-roll logic could be inverted because the seven-footer setting the screen might also be the best decision-maker on the floor.

The Ripple isn't that every team began looking for another Jokic, because there really isn't another Jokic. It's that he widened the acceptable job description for elite big men. Passing and processing stopped being complementary big-man skills; in the right player, they could become the architecture of an entire championship offense.

WHAT HIS PEERS SAY

“There has not been a more dominant, complete player that I’ve played against. From the passing to the shooting to the rebounding to the attention. There’s nothing he cannot do on the offensive end. Like, nothing at all. Nothing. You try to double him, he’s going to make you pay. You try to play him single coverage, he’s going to make you pay." - (LeBron James, 2025)

IN HIS OWN WORDS

"This is not a job. We are just playing the game here. I am enjoying the game. I am playing every game as a game of pickup basketball in my hometown.’’ - (Nikola Jokic, 2017)
