5. Kevin Durant

50 WORDS ON KEVIN DURANT

Kevin Durant made scoring feel unfair. The handle looked borrowed from a guard, the release came from somewhere defenders could not reach, and every pull-up seemed preapproved. He moved through eras, teams, controversies, and injuries without losing the central truth: give him space, give him resistance, it barely mattered anyway.

2-time NBA Champion, 2-time Finals MVP (2017 and 2018), 2007-08 Rookie of the Year, 2013-14 Regular Season MVP, 16-time All-Star, 12-time All-NBA, 6 top-five finishes in MVP Vote

THE PEAK

2013-14 - Durant averaged a career-high 32.0 points, plus 7.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists, while shooting 50.3% from the field, 39.1% from three and 87.3% from the line. He won his fourth scoring title in five years and received 119 of 125 first-place MVP votes.

It’s the season where scoring stopped looking like something Durant was trying to do and more like the natural consequence of him being on the floor.

WTF STAT

Notched the only game in NBA Playoff history with 45+ points, 15+ rebounds and 10+ assists, just six months after returning from a ruptured achilles.

NON-BASKETBALL COMPARISON

Watch The Throne - Monumental talent joining monumental talent, creating something almost unfairly polished and maximalist. People can argue forever about ego, circumstances and collaboration, but nobody can seriously question the quality of Kevin Durant's game.

THE RIPPLE

Durant helped destroy the assumption that size had to come with offensive limitations.

At roughly seven feet tall, he could operate like a wing: bring the ball up, shoot over defenders off the dribble, run pick-and-roll, attack closeouts, score from the post and punish switches without needing to live near the basket.

What Durant demonstrated was how devastating that archetype could become when the player also possessed elite guard-level shooting and handle. There was no conventional matchup for him. Smaller defenders couldn’t contest the release, while bigger defenders couldn’t comfortably follow him on the perimeter.

His ripple is visible in the continued obsession with finding long, skilled forwards who can function as primary scorers rather than traditional frontcourt players. Durant didn’t create positionless basketball, but he became one of its most extreme offensive proofs of concept.

WHAT HIS PEERS SAY

“To me he’s one of the best scorers, if not the best scorer this league has ever seen.” - (Dirk Nowitzki, 2021)

IN HIS OWN WORDS

“I’m Kevin Durant. You know who I am. Y’all know who I am.” - (Kevin Durant, 2019)
